FROM STNGWIRE REPORTS
Police are seeking a motive in the murder of a man who was shot by one of two men who opened fire on him across the street from Humboldt Park on the West Side early Tuesday.

The victim -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Michael Contreras -- was walking down the street about 1 a.m. when he was approached by two unknown black men who appeared to be 19-21-years-old at 1237 N. California Ave., according to Shakespeare District police Capt. Marc Buslik, who was citing preliminary information.

“One of the offenders opens fire, striking the victim several times in the abdomen,’’ the captain said, adding that the weapon used was a handgun.

Contreras, 30, of the 1700 block of West Ohio Street, was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he died, according to the captain, who said it was not known what Contreras was doing when he was shot. He was not affiliated with a street gang that police were aware of and he did not have an arrest record with Chicago Police, according to the captain.

Contreras was pronounced dead at Stroger at 4:44 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

After the shooting, the two attackers got into a small, dark-colored car that was last seen traveling east on Crystal Street from California, according to Buslik. A motive has not been determined, though the area where the slaying took place has been plagued by ongoing gang problems, Buslik said.

The two attackers remained at large as of 6:30 a.m.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Tuesday.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
